OTHER ACTIVITIES

KAYAKING, HUNTING, BEAR VIEWING, ATV, HORSEBACK RIDING

Sea Kayaking

Sea kayaking is the most intimate way of experiencing the natural wonders of Kachemak Bay. Soaring bald eagles, playful sea otter pups, seals, sea lions as well as thousands of nesting sea birds inhabit the protected waters across the bay. The almost silent travel of a sea kayak will take you to an undisturbed marine ecosystem with a minimum of impact on the environment. All trips originate from the Homer boat harbor and includes round trip water taxi to Peterson bay where your adventure begins. Your guide will show you the proper way of entering as well as the proper technique for paddling a sea kayak. You will observe first hand the fascinating natural wonders of Kachemak Bay and you will also have a chance to explore the vast tide pools along the beach. All trips are run by knowledgeable experienced guides in safe stable sea kayaks. Departure time is 8:30 am and return is 5:00 pm. Half day trips are also available!

Hunting

Black bear hunting is exceptional, whether it is spring or fall. Usually, several bears are spotted throughout the day. Most of the bears spotted are 5' to 5' 1/2 with an average weight of 125 lbs. to 150 lbs. Patient hunters willing to pass up those smaller bears are normally rewarded with a chance at a trophy measuring out at 6 to 6 1/2 foot. An exceptionally big bear in our area will measure 7' plus. During the spring hunts most of the bears are found on or near the beaches and during the fall hunts the bears tend to head for higher elevations. You can also combine fishing with hunting, to make a well rounded trip. In Alaska a guide is not required for hunting black bear. Non-resident hunters must be accompanied by a licensed guide to hunt for brown bear. Spring black bear hunts start in April and run until the end of May. Brown bear hunts start May 10th through May 25th in even numbered years and Oct 1st through Oct 21st in odd number of years. Kodiak deer hunts run from Oct 1 until early December.

Bear Viewing

Katmai National Park offers perhaps the world's best bear viewing, and certainly the wildest. You will be given the opportunity to observe and photograph numerous grizzlies in their undisturbed natural habitat. From the spring breeding bears to the summer and fall frenzy of grizzlies catching and eating salmon. Flights depart from Beluga Lake in Homer across Cook Inlet. You will then fly past Cape Douglas, a group of volcanic mountains that protrude into the mouth of Cook Inlet. On these peaks sit glaciers that extend all the way to the beach, as well as beautiful blue-green lakes filled with giant icebergs. Most of the time, you can see whales if the water is calm.

ATV Four Wheeling

Enjoy Homer's unique beauty on a 4 wheel ATV. These machines are easy to drive and require no previous experience. Choose from a 4 or 6 hour moose spotting tour. Overnight Camp Trip and Clam Digging Trips are also available. Rain gear, helmets, 4 wheelers and beverages are provided...and, oh, yes! Lots of adventure! Guests will need to dress comfortably with warm clothes, long pants, boots, glasses (no contacts, please), and/or sunglasses. You'll also certainly want to bring your camera or video camera and lots of extra film! Guests must be 16 years or older to drive.

Horseback Riding

You will start by meeting your horse, and as you are getting acquainted you will ride down switchbacks to the beach and up the Fox River Flats for a half day trip. You'll enjoy the gorgeous view of Kachemak Bay and the Kenai Mountains with its glaciers from the backs of these gentle Alaskan horses. The full day trip will take you either into the high country and the Anchor River Headwaters or to the head of Kachemak Bay where you'll see the tide flats and rivers of Fox River Valley. Half day trips (four hours) and full day trips as well as outfitted pack trips are available. Guests should bring comfortable riding clothes and footwear and may want to bring sunglasses, rainwear, hats or safety helmets, bug spray and sunscreen. Saddle bags provided for water bottles, canteens or trail snacks. Don't forget your camera!
